September 10 - Nov 19 (10-weeks)

*No classes Oct 12-17 and Sunday, Nov 15

Join us this fall as we dance into the new Hippo song collection, designed especially for kids ages 5-8. Your child will have fun drumming, singing, moving to new rhythms, and exploring a variety of instruments and music games especially engaging for early elementary aged children. This semester, we'll explore drumming patterns based on rhythms used in Gahu, the popular, recreational dance of the Ewe people of Ghana. We'll learn 20 songs, including “Gahu Ee” a call-and-response song from the Ewe people of Ghana, Togo, and Benin in Western Africa and the traditional Andean folksong, “La vicuñita,” often heard in Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina. The "Hip Hop Hippo" rap will let children break out their hip-hop dance moves! All songs in this collection have been chosen and arranged specifically to support your child's music development. Tuition includes our song collection recordings, songbook, and access to special drumming videos for practice at home.

This class requires a small (roughly 9" x 18") djembe drum to play in class and at home. If you don't have one already, when you register we will give you information about retailers that offer special discounts to our Rhythm Kids® families. You can expect to pay around $100 for a good quality small drum, it will sound fantastic and last a long time -- they're also great for sing-alongs, drum circles, and jam sessions of all types!
